When it is & isn’t Safe to Drive Your Car After Collision

Most times, car accidents are not fatal and the vehicles are damaged. As much as cars can be seen to be less damaged, there are still hidden damages that could be fatal. Driving without taking these car safety features, could lead to more car crashes and injuries. Before driving a motor vehicle after a car crash, here are a few things to be checked:

1. Lighting

The headlights and taillights should be checked if they are working well. Driving with faulty lights could cause accidents. At night especially, it becomes difficult for other motorists to see the vehicle. It is also illegal to drive without headlights or tail lights. Hence, if the lights have a problem, then it is not safe to drive the car.

2. Mirrors

Mirrors are very important when it comes to checking the traffic around you. If the passenger-side mirror is damaged, then the rear-view mirror could be used in its place. Otherwise, the car should not be driven.

3. Leaking fluids

Check below the car to see if any fluids are leaking to the ground. This could either be the brake fluid or the antifreeze fluid. The antifreeze fluid indicates damage in the radiator, which could cause the engine to overheat. Driving with the brake fluid leaking could cause brake failures. If not sure about the fluid leaking, do not drive the car and let the car be towed.

4. Wheels

Different factors need to be checked when it comes to the vehicle’s wheels. Ensure the wheels are properly aligned. If they are not well aligned, they can cause the car to pull to one side, hence swerving to the other lane. Check each tire individual to see if there are any damages. Check whether its flat or if it has a low tread that has been caused by skidding. If there are any damages, then it is not too safe the vehicle, unless the tires are changed.

5. Locking mechanisms

Parts like the doors and bonnets use locking mechanisms. In a car crash, these mechanisms can be damaged, hence preventing them not to lock or unlock. If a bonnet’s locking mechanism is spoilt, then built up pressure could cause the bonnet to fly up blocking the driver’s visibility. Also, ensure that seat belts could fasten and unfasten.

6. Airbag

If the airbag was set off in the car accident, then it proves that the car experienced a significant blow. It is not advisable to drive the car in this state until a mechanic has checked and has set the airbag back in its place.

7. Windscreen

The windscreen is the most important when it comes to visibility. If it experiences a lot of damage, then it is not advisable to drive the vehicle. This is because the driver’s vision will be impaired, and they are not able to make the right judgments on the road.

Apart from the car, it is important to note if the driver is also in good condition to drive the car. Otherwise, with the above checked, the vehicle could be driven home.
