ADAS Technology – What is It?

Car safety is a major issue. The car manufacturers have added a lot of safety features in their cars to ensure the safety of the passengers. Seatbelts and airbags are a good example of this. Aside from passenger safety, road safety is another concern that car manufacturers are trying to sort out. In the event of a car accident, there are other vehicles on the road that get damaged as well. Most of these accidents are caused due to human error. So, eliminating this human error is the key to limiting car accidents. It is for this purpose that the ADAS technology has been designed.

ADAS Technology

ADAS or Advanced Driver-Assistance System automates many of the functions of the car and takes them out of the control of the driver. This is done to limit the chances of human error and ensure that the car doesn’t become a danger to the other vehicles on the road. Moreover, this system can also provide alerts to the driver regarding various issues that can lead to an accident. For instance, it can warn the driver about blind spots on the road and show them what they can’t see with their own eyes. This way ADAS can avert a collision from ever happening.

ADAS also has the capability to take control of the car whenever it senses that the driver isn’t in total control of the vehicle. For instance, if the driver falls asleep or becomes unconscious while driving then the ADAS will take over and stop the car until the driver gets up or regains consciousness. Modern versions of this system are even connected to the internet and receive live information like traffic warnings too. This helps them in letting the driver know about any roadblocks or weather-related hazards on the road ahead and how to safely avoid them.

The ADAS technology is proving to be a real lifesaver and it is being hoped that advancement in this technology can further improve car and road safety in the future. However, there are certain quirks in it that need to be addressed. Moreover, the drivers need to be trained on how to interpret and act on the different information and warnings that the ADAS provides them with while driving. Only by taking these measures can we fully avail the benefits of this new technology.
